Planting our organic garden.

My dad came by and planted our garden. It is an all organic garden and we should reap a bountiful harvest later this year. 17 tomatos plants of various types, 2 rows of potatoes and mesclun salad, 1 row each of carrots, green and yellow beans, and a half row of beets and a few pepper, broccoli and cauliflower plants.I'm sure we'll have tomatos coming out our ears.

Snow shovel modification,

This post is for the link I posted in Cascade Climbers. This is a view of my snow shovel modifications. I used a 1 1/4" hole saw and left enough material around the edges to maintain the stiffness. Works great in any snow conditions and is the lightest mountaineering shovel around.

4/10/05 Plan to climb Mt. Matier N.W. face foiled again.

I started out up the Joffre lakes trail Saturday morning under perfect weather. Some snowshoers had thoughtfully packed a nice, wide trail so the going was easy. I knew the weather was forecast to be good today, turning a bit iffy tomorrow, but since I had not been up anywhere in a month or so I decided to take a chance.
An easy walk up led to the upper lake in a couple of hours. I strapped the skis on and slid across the lake to the moraine. I could see recent avalanche debris down the chute so I went over the the side of the moraine. I wanted to stay far enough away from the icefall in case something let go. As the photos show, the weather was great, but halfway up the chute I turned around and this nasty black cloud was scudding in directly behind me. As I got to the top it hit with quite strong winds and heavy horizontal blowing snow. Visibility was very limited and I figured that I had better get down the chute before the avy hazard got too high. I didn't want to be wandering alone on the glacier when I couldn't see past my ski tips. So had a little lunch and boogied back down.
